Literature Text

I knew the drive to Seattle would be long if I obeyed the speed limit, but I wanted to see just how fast my new car could go. The need for speed seems to be a supernatural thing. Most of the humans I’d met didn’t like driving as fast as the vampires and werewolves would drive. In fact, our speed usually scared them. Jacob was quiet for about a half-hour before I finally broke his adoring silence.

“We’re going to Seattle,” I told him simply.

“Seattle?” he asked, finally snapping out of his amazement. “Why Seattle?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “It was the first place that popped into my head.”

“Well, what do you plan on doing while we’re there?” he asked as he reached for my hand. I grabbed his hand and squeezed gently.

“Ooh, I don’t know. Maybe we can look at china,” I said, laughing and glancing at Jake’s shocked face. “What? You proposed, didn’t you? Shouldn’t we start planning.”

“I didn’t – well, we don’t – I wasn’t –” Jake stammered.

“You didn’t want to rush things,” it wasn’t a question.

“Not unless you want to,” he said cautiously. I shrugged and pushed the gas pedal further. Jacob’s eyes bulged and I laughed.

“Still not used to the vampire speed?” I asked him, teasing.

“Not quite,” he admitted. “Though, I must admit, I enjoy it!” He relaxed a little, tilting his head back and closing his eyes. “Just don’t kill us, ok?”

“I’m not planning on dying for a very long time,” I assured him.

“Are you planning on killing me?” he asked in a joking manner.

“Well, I don’t have every detail planned out yet,” I said, leaving the comment hang.

“Hey!” Jake laughed. “Don’t you know it’s not nice to kill your fiancé?”

“Aah,” I sighed. “Fiancé. It has a nice ring to it.” He laughed.

“Yes, it does,” he agreed. “Do you really want to look at china?”

“No!” I laughed. “But we should get some with wolves on it.” He squeezed my hand.

“Do you really like the ring?” he asked, sounding worried. I showed him exactly what I thought about the ring and marrying him. I pictured in detail how I thought our wedding would look, and how handsome he would look in a tux. I was careful to leave out any ideas of my wedding dress so I wouldn’t ruin the surprise. I even added a little part of the honeymoon.

“Well, I’m glad you like it that much!” Jacob said when I stopped. “Thinking about the honeymoon already, are you?”

“It was just one thought,” I said casually.

“Ooh,” he sounded hurt.

“Get over yourself, Jake!” I said laughing. “It’s going to happen.” I heard him smile beside me and settle a little deeper into his seat.

“Where do you want to go?” he asked. I thought about it a little, popping pictures of different countries into his mind. He laughed.

“Anywhere from Ecuador to Antarctica, then?” he asked sarcastically.

“Pretty much,” I admitted. “I just want to be alone with you for as long as possible.”

“Sounds great!” he said with a light squeeze of my hand. We drove in silence for about an hour. Every once in a while, I’d pop a happy thought into his head, and he’d squeeze my hand.

“I love you, Jacob,” I said finally. “I forgot to tell you that when you proposed.”

“No,” he said. “You told me more than that. But, I love you, too.” I smiled, resisting the urge to kiss him again. I might have inherited my dad’s driving skills, but I doubt either of us were talented enough to do what I wanted to do and keep a car on the road. I thought briefly about wrecking, and Jacob gasped.

“What?” I asked, worried he’d somehow hurt himself. How would that be possible? Momma told me about him cutting his hand open once without even noticing.

“What was that about a car accident?” he demanded. I hadn’t realized I’d been projecting my thoughts to him. I guess that just came naturally with Jake.

“Ooh, nothing,” I assured him. “It was just an idle thought.”

“Well, maybe you should slow down. I don’t want it to become a reality,” he sounded nervous.

“I’m not Aunt Alice,” I reminded him. “I show you what I’m thinking, not the future.” He still felt tense. I wished for a second that Uncle Jasper were in the car to calm Jake down.

“Look, we’re already half-way there,” Jake said after a couple minutes of silence. I didn’t listen to his request to slow down, and actually sped up after hearing the news.

“Great!” I said.

“Seriously, what are you planning to do in Seattle?” he asked.

“Seriously,” I said, mimicking him, “I have no idea.” We drove on in silence with the occasional shared thought. I replayed the proposal, and my telling Jake I loved him for the first time over and over, just to see him smile. I truly loved Jacob Black. Maybe we would look at china patters while we were in Seattle. I laughed.
